Part 2: When training people, don't start with the basics

How to do a 10x better job training people managers (or anyone) to be successful

Yesterday’s post ended with a much better agenda for training:

  1. Start with what the job is actually for

  2. Define what success looks like, clearly

  3. Explain why you got this job…why you were chosen for it

  4. Explain how people’s minds work so you don’t step on land mines

  5. Explain the importance of connection on the team and to the work

  6. Lay out the groundwork of a high-performance management system

Now, this list of steps applies to training in anything. Customer service, sales, fence building, baking, whatever. In all cases, before teaching people what to do, it’s powerful to start with why they’re doing it and how it’s done well.

For the purpose of this post, I’ll focus on the most important training you will do: manager training. If you don’t get manager training right, it’ll destroy your business from within.

Today’s post is exclusively for paying subscribers, where we’ll get into how you can bring this approach to life on your team.
